Castelli di Jesi

This is the central-northern part of Marche between Jesi and Fano, a strip of land stretching from the Adriatic coast to the slopes of the Apennines. Here in Verdicchio country, the variety has ancient roots and a strong, almost visceral, bond with the territory. Elsewhere the verdicchio grape struggles to reach similar heights. It is here, in the vineyards of Torre, Le Busche, San Sebastiano, Villa Bianchi, Monteschiavo, Follonica and San Lorenzo, that Umani Ronchi’s great whites are born.

Conero

Mount Conero looks out onto the Adriatic from a stretch of coast that seems to ruffle the shoreline’s smooth progression. The slopes that run round the Conero promontory are home to the vineyards that the estate sets aside for red-skinned grapes, mainly Montepulciano, which around here goes by the name of Rosso Conero. Conditions here are special. The coast is near at hand and the sea has a weather-mitigating effect. Temperatures are not so high and the soil calcareous. Here the grapes ripe well and from this tiny corner of Marche, we have wines that combine extreme typicality with purity and elegance. Unique wines. That's our challenge.

Abruzzo

For proof, go 100 kilometres south to Abruzzo, where energy from the sun is more abundant and the soil is more fertile. Only 100 kilometres away but everything has changed. Elegance gives way to power. The grape is montepulciano d’Abruzzo, grown at Roseto degli Abruzzi in rows trained to pergola, the most traditional vine training system. Few other territories in Italy can deliver good yields with such excellent quality and a vintage-to-vintage consistency that never ceases to amaze.
