2008
Seasonal Report
The Auntumn/Winter 2007/2008 has been a season characterized by a rather hot and dry weather. A mild and rainy spring has allowed us to get a proper quantity of water, after a rather dry summer. Just during the second half of August we experienced a short oppressive heat, followed by a mild September with no rains at all and wide day and night temperatures range. Weather did not inhibit then the development of vines and grapes, which could be harvested in very healthy conditions .
Harvest
Harvest began about ten days later than 2007, but still starting earlier compared to the average. Chardonnay grapes for
Le Busche were indeed harvested soon after August, the 25th, while from the 27th we started to harvest part of Verdicchio, Merlot for
Pelago and Sangiovese. Around mid September Verdicchio grapes for
Casal di Serra production have reached their maturity as well as Bianchello grapes for
Fortunae and Cabernet Sauvignon for
Pelago. Harvest of Montepulciano took off at the end of September, starting from grapes selected for
Serrano production, followed by the
San Lorenzo one and finally ending into the more mature grapes for
Cùmaro, Supra and Pelago, at about mid October. In the meantime the Verdicchio grapes selected for
Plenio and
Casal di Serra Vecchie Vigne were picked up too. In the neighbouring area, the Abruzzo region, where the season was rather dry, the grapes for
Jorio and
Costamorro were picked up during the last few days of September.
Quality and Quantity
2008 harvest will always stay in our memory as an historical harvest, considering the outstanding quality levels achieved from both white and red grapes. Thanks to its mild temperatures, the season has allowed our white wines, especially the Verdicchio, to reach a very good balance in terms of acidity and alcoholic strength. Our
Casal di Serra,
Plenio,
Casal di Serra Vecchie Vigne,
Villa Bianchi, will not let us regret the amazing 2006 vintage. It was a excellent vintage for the red grapes as well, both for the earliest ones like Merlot or Cabernet Sauvignon and for the late ones like Montepulciano. In particular all red wines will be thick and deep, powerful and elegant, thanks to the good phenological maturation achieved. We now need to wait with great expectation for the release of
Cùmaro,
San Lorenzo,
Pelago,
Serrano,
Jorio and
Costamorro. Quantity is deeply up in the white grape area, while the red one has kept the same low production as last vintage.
Vinification
The healthy grapes notably favoured the wine-making process. As usual, we have paid close attention to the temperature control, through cooling grapes, and to the cold-soak technique, which reduces unwanted oxidation to the wine.
