56 times Vinitaly. The reportage of the 2024 edition.

It has been the Vinitaly of grand numbers: over 4 thousand wineries from all over Italy, producers from 30 countries, 30 thousand operators, 1200 top buyers from 68 nations, 97 thousand visitors including 30 thousand from abroad. And among conferences, forums, and tastings, the 56th edition of the International Wine and Spirits Exhibition has been a moment of reflection on the strategic value of wine for Italy.

Numbers, energy, density, ideas filled the 4 days of our Vinitaly. It has been the "number 56" edition for us as well, a special one holding the title of "Winery of the Year 2024" from Gambero Rosso. The edition that has seen “Historical” being acknowledged among the great Italian whites, but also the one of important milestones like the celebration of "the 40 years of Casal di Serra"; the debut of "Lh2 Version 14" and the feature of "La Hoz Rosé" among the protagonists of Gabriele Gorelli's Italy’s sparkling world...

Let's proceed in order, starting from Opera Wine and the Finest Italian Wines! For the thirteenth consecutive year, Wine Spectator selected 131 Italian wineries for the grand tasting in Verona and counted Umani Ronchi among the "all-timer" 25 wineries. Under the spotlight of the American magazine's tasting team, Historical 2019, our Verdicchio dei Castelli di Jesi Classico Superiore in its second vintage, as a newcomer. A wine that comes from an isolated plot of old vines in Montecarotto and is destined for a long aging of over 5 years before entering the market. A small production already part of the exclusive club of the greatest Italian wines from white grape varieties.

The success of Historical follows the global trend of positive production and consumption towards white wines, rosés, and sparkling wines, reflecting the growth of the Classico and Superiore denominations of Verdicchio dei Castelli di Jesi, a growth that denotes greater attention to quality and to aged white wines.

Speaking of the rise of the Sparkling wine segment, Gabriele Gorelli MW led the Cool Under Pressure masterclass, featuring 12 single-varietal in this category, from 11 different regions of Italy exploring the personality of each wine and stimulating our emotions. From Ca' del Bosco to Zenato, from Giulio Ferrari to Villa Sandi, Gorelli accompanied the audience in discovering our La Hoz Rosé, made with only Montepulciano grapes from the Conero area. A wine that manages to express the versatility of Montepulciano and that can challenge the (not easy) market according to Gorelli.

Vinitaly also saw the debut of the Version 14 of LH2 (Little Heaven 2 grape varieties is the extended form of the acronym: in practice, two varieties, Verdicchio and Chardonnay, capable of recreating a "little paradise" in the glass). Version 14 reflects the percentages of the blend (Verdicchio 78% and Chardonnay 22%) and the predominant harvest (2021). From this release, each version will have a precise identity and will express the sum of the different details that translate into value and uniqueness.

The first 40 years of Casal di Serra represent a very important milestone, both at a regional and at an absolute national level. There are few Italian white wines that can boast such a significant path, moreover lived on an international scale, since Casal di Serra is a 'symbolic wine' for the development and expansion of Umani Ronchi in the world. For this special occasion, we have dedicated an original poster to Casal di Serra presented in preview during the days of the fair.

Seminars and events

Historical 2019 was the protagonist of the tasting organized by The Doctor Wine Selection (Sunday, April 14th) while Historical 2018 was chosen for the tastings of Gambero Rosso - Tre Bicchieri Vinitaly Special Edition - and for "Le Gemme" of the Vitae Guide 2024 of Ais. While Cùmaro 2019 awaited its admirers at Vinitaly & the city, the Fuorisalone in the square, Ex Cortile del Tribunale, in the city center.
